On the roofs of slums and Guangzhou Walk

"When we went to Hong Kong to Shanghai. Chosen mode of locomotion by land. Along the way, we decided to stay for a few days in the neighborhood adjacent to Hong Kong Guangzhou. Below is a short story about the fact that we managed to see there.
From Hong Kong to Guangzhou, we traveled by train. As soon as we crossed the border into Hong Kong - China, just a lot has changed. The first impression I had was that we arrived in the provincial town of deaf. Gone are almost all English-language signs, the Chinese around dressed in a simple, featureless, "gray" clothing. Station, from where we went was crowded and very dirty. Ahead of us waiting for a difficult quest to find a hotel, "- says Rufer and blogger Vadim Mahora.
provincial atmosphere left me and after leaving the station. Hong Kong seemed bright, vivid, diverse. Guangzhou after it created the opposite impression.
We needed to find a hotel. It would seem that could be easier than to drive address in the map and follow the route? But in fact, the label on the offline map led us to some residential area, where no one had ever heard of our hotel. Moreover, no one around could not understand English and could not help us. Time sought to night, and we are with big bags pondered what to do. there was no internet. Saved us a screenshot if the hotel reservation, where small, but enough to understand was a map of the hotel location. I still do not understand why the address of armor and the actual location of the hotel differed from each other. We had a cheap hotel. Star, but cheap as a hostel. Upon arrival it turned out that the room we had although big, but Windows does not have. So the next day we woke up around 2 o'clock in the afternoon in complete darkness. We in turn woke up, thought it was still dark and it was morning, and went to sleep on, while some of us do not look at the clock.
We had a little time, but we wanted to have time to climb on the roofs and visit the Canton Tower.
A little help from the Internet.
Guangzhou - one of 24 historical cities in China, with more than 2,000 years of history. The city was founded in 862 BC. e. At the moment the city is home to over 13 million people. Guangzhou - the city of sub-provincial value of the Chinese People's Republic, the capital of Guangdong Province, the political, economic, scientific and technological, educational, cultural and transport center of the whole of South China.
Currently, the city is a major tourist, industrial, financial and transportation center of China. Guangzhou - a world-renowned center of light industry, producing products made of silk, cotton, jute, ramie, and synthetic fibers. In Guangzhou, there are about 100 wholesale markets, different types of goods and hundreds of thousands of industrial enterprises, factories, mills (shipbuilding, automotive, manufacturing equipment for the textile and food industries, newsprint, refined sugar, small appliances, tires, bicycles, sports equipment , porcelain, cement, chemicals, electronic components). There are still produced products of traditional arts and crafts (painted and cloisonné enamel, lacquer ware, ivory carving, fans, parasols, jade, embroidery) and developed fish farming and fishing. In Guangzhou twice a year goes by Canton Fair (CECF, Canton Fair) - one of the most important events of the year in the world of production and trade. To date, this is the third industrial exhibition in the world in terms of volume of transactions.
The residential areas on the background of skyscrapers.
The complex of sports facilities Tinhe, including the Tianhe stadium, whose capacity of 60,000 people.
Due to the large number of factories over the city worth thick smog. Smog is not here only on weekends and holidays. The frame, you can see the Canton Tower.
Canton Tower. The height of the tower is 600 meters away, this makes it the second TV tower height in the world. Up to a height of 450 meter tower is erected as a combination bearing hyperboloid retina and the central core. Hyperboloid structure of the retina corresponds to Patent Guangzhou TV Tower in 1899 the Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov.
Canton Tower - it is a huge tourist attraction. At altitudes of 33, 116, 168 and 449 meters are located glassed observation platforms, there is an outdoor sightseeing platform at a height of 488 meters. Revolving restaurants are located at heights of 418 and 428 meters at an altitude of 407 meters there are "VIP-cafe".
View from the top observation deck over the city. Guangzhou immersed in smog.
Bottom visible inspection booths, which revolve around the perimeter of the tower. Yet there is the free-fall attraction for especially brave.
In spite of the smog, the city at night is transformed.
Skyscrapers in China are growing like mushrooms. I wonder how will China still 5-10 years.
There is another attraction - climb up the spiral staircase around the central core of the tower. Lifting height - 136 meters. And if you went below, then no turning back - the door closes behind you, exit only at the top.
Between climbs on the roof one day we accidentally wandered into the slums going to be demolished. It was quite an interesting place, which soon will not.
This quarter is called Xian Cun. In the picture you can see piles of concrete boxes - this is a slum.
China built by leaps and bounds. As I have said, skyscrapers are mushrooming. The old neighborhoods are being demolished without hesitation and to build new ones. Xiancun - one of the few neighborhoods that have not yet managed to demolish and rebuild. At the moment, slums represent a low-rise semi-abandoned and very dense development. The area is enclosed by a wall at the entrance to his duty policemen.
Despite the fact that these houses seem to be completely abandoned, the area is still a glimmer of life.
In fact, in this area takes place a real social problem. Not all residents want to leave and give up their homes to be demolished.
There is a confrontation between the residents and the authorities. The first did not want to sign agreements on the demolition of their homes, while the latter are trying to displace the first, complicating their lives - demolished bulldozers markets limit garbage collection, prohibit the sale, etc...
But, despite all the protests, the number of people in the area decreases. It seems to me that China is useless to argue with authority in such matters. Here are a few examples. The photo can be found homeless.
On the one hand, citizens can understand. This is mainly poor people, hard workers, they have lived here all my life, and this land belongs to their ancestors. But on the other hand, the house in which they lived, was already in disrepair, poor drainage, lack of basic sanitation and very dense buildings, where the streets are not formed by the road, and the gaps between the houses, the width of which is less than one meter. Living conditions there were very bad - all this pales in comparison with the rest of the "new" China.
Another interesting point. The main part of those people who have moved out to the slum, waiting for resettlement in new homes. But to build these homes, you need to demolish the old. And it turns out that the tenants of the protesters, not sliding down from the slums, creating problems not only power but also ordinary people who are waiting for their apartments.
The following will slum pictures without any description.
