It is located 25 kilometers to the north of Sicily, is the southernmost of the Aeolian Islands. The island has an area of 21 sq. km, height 499 meters of the island.
The island is a multiple array of volcanic craters, one of which - the current (one of the four active volcanoes Italy). The last eruption occurred at Vulcano in 1888-1890 years.

Since the days of ancient Rome, the island was the source of building materials - stone and wood, the island was the extraction of sulfur and alum. Until the end of the XIX century, mining of sulfur was the main occupation of the inhabitants of the island.
At the present time on the island of 470 people live (2008). Residents are engaged in mainly tourist services.
