The Link of times
I've been wanting to take a picture on the background of Stalingrad Volgograd, but I held back the idea that I can hardly find anything in the city, which was completely destroyed during the war. Over time, to explore the city from a distance, it was clear that all was not lost. And I was lucky, I met with people who are very dear to their city and its history. I arrived in the city-hero at the end of February, and for three days we were able to find and capture what you see below.
1942-43 Stalingrad - Volgograd 2013

Where was it possible to determine the place to centimeters, we did it, but in other cases, accuracy is dependent on binding to other objects. I'd never had to shoot so many phantoms buildings remain only in old photographs. The whole city is rebuilt, some of the streets in the center were laid in a new way, hacked through the ruins, so the old buildings, in some cases linked to the accuracy of meters to tens of meters, ask experts for it to forgive me.
In my works I used photos of war correspondents Emmanuel Evzerihin, George Selma, Natalia Bode, Sergei Strunnikova, Anatoly Yegorov, Stepan Kurunina, George Lipskerova, Alexei Krasavina as well as correspondent Thomas Makavoya LIFE.
So, the summer of 1942. After the Red Army accident near Kharkov in the front line to the Don steppes exposed, and overcoming the desperate resistance of the few Soviet forces, the Wehrmacht launched an offensive toward the Volga and the Caucasus. August 23 Germans out of Stalingrad, on the same day the worst air raid of German bombers, which turned the once prosperous city in ruins solid. In just a few hours died more than 40 thousand inhabitants.

The obelisk in the square of the Fallen fighters.

The angle of the hotel "Most of Stalingrad" and the building department. Before airstrike.
Both of these buildings and what remains of them, will be seen in many photographs. After the war, the restored building of the department store in the basement which housed the headquarters of Paulus, will be built the hotel "Intourist", but we'll get to that later.

The German cannon is firing positions in the elevator.
The building elevator is the highest in the city, and turned fierce battles for him. Stalingrad elevator defended sailors Severomorsk.

Str. Ostrovsky. Refugee women with things.
An acute angle, the remainder of the hotel "Most of Stalingrad" allows you to calculate with some accuracy this place. All modern buildings are built in the frame without reference to the foundations of the old, new places.

On the walls of the elevator is now easily possible to see traces of the war.

After the battle at Fallen Fighters Square at the House of pilots.
At the site of the House of pilots (left), now the building of the Volgograd State Medical University, connected to the arch with the hotel "Volgograd" to the right (also a new building). A Pushkin Street remained between them.

The theater building was rebuilt after the war, but have changed dramatically:

On the right is one of the few surviving pre-war buildings in part, now it is the hotel "Old Stalingrad".

Same place, just on the other side. Behind yet Colonel-General Paulus the same Department, which will go down in history associated with his name.

The building on the left (Port Said, 8a) as if he had not changed.

House of Pavlov became one of the symbols of the defense of Stalingrad. In September 1942, the assault group under the command of Sergeant Yakov Pavlov knocked the Germans out of the building. Soviet soldiers kept house, repulsing the attacks of the Nazis for two months until the liquidation of the German group. Field Marshal Paulus on the first interrogation after capture confessed that when trying to capture the house on the square on January 9, Germany has lost many of their soldiers than in the conquest of France.

After the war, Pavlov's House built a colonnade. In the background you can see the building Gerhardt mill.

Pavlov's House was one of the first buildings in Stalingrad recovery record. Now this is an ordinary house. When I shot it, old lady angrily closed the curtain.

No inscriptions on the house has been preserved, but at both ends to attach the monumental brick inserts.

This house is located in the southern part of the city, where German is not reached. But the traces of destruction on the house stand under modern paint.

The Battle of the destroyed building of the hotel "Most of Stalingrad."
There is a building already destroyed more than the photo number 5. Part of the old Tsaritsyn - Stalingrad before the war - had the diagonal layout of the streets, after the war, instead of them struck the streets parallel and perpendicular to the Volga. First punched Street - Street of Peace takes on the photo to the right.

Soviet T-34 tanks at the station.
Station is also in the course of the fighting was heavily damaged. After the war, in its place built a new station, it bears little resemblance to the old one.

Volgograd 2013. Soldiers at the Museum of Defense of Tsaritsyn at the end of the fighting.
Now it is called Volgograd Memorial and Historical Museum, there is a very interesting exhibition dedicated to the Civil War, and white, and red. And behind the soldiers erected a monument to the legendary Cossack Konstantin I. Nedorubovu full of Knights of St. George, and Hero of the Soviet Union. Behind you can see the station building.

The building was severely damaged during the fighting, but it was rebuilt in its present form.

The Fountain "Children's Dance" at Railway Square.
At the site of the fountain is now parking.

Railway Station Square. Fountain "Children's dance."
This photo Emmanuel Evzerihin is the most famous photograph taken in combating Stalingrad.

The Fountain "Children's Dance" on the background of the Defense Museum.
The fountain itself is typical, in several cities of the Soviet Union were built exactly the same (Voronezh, Dnepropetrovsk).

The Fountain "Children's dance." The fountain was rebuilt after the war, but in the 50 years analyzed like no artistic value.

The Fountain "Children's dance."
Judging by the Volgograd press from time to time there is a question about the restoration of the fountain, but so far more than talk is not moved.

Dzerzhinsky Square. T-34 tank at the Stalingrad tractor factory opposite the school №3.
Exactly the same tank, and maybe this is worth here on the left as a monument.

dugout in the school yard №3.
Tragic fate of the civilian population of Stalingrad. Of those who survived the bombing, many do not have time to evacuate, they had to live almost on the front line in the cellars and dugouts. On the German-occupied territory of civilians are being evicted and drove into Germany.

The tank T-34 on the Square of Fallen Fighters.
Again, it helped bind the building department, shines through the hotel "Intourist".

Beketovka. Paulus after the surrender before the first interrogation at the headquarters of the 64th Army.
January 30 Hitler, Paulus was promoted to Field Marshal. Radiogram to this order has been accepted, when the headquarters of Paulus in the department store has already approached the Soviet assault groups. Hitler hoped that Paulus in this case, prefer to shoot. However, the morning took delivery of Field Marshal captured. By 12 o'clock he was taken to the headquarters Beketovka commander of the 64th Army, General Shumilova, where he took the first interrogation of Field Marshal.
This is the place to find it was not so difficult (it was more difficult to pass). In the distance you can see the building of the hospital, perfectly preserved since then. But upon closer inspection, in line and right at home. they just look a little bit older and rooted in the ground. 70 years have passed yet.

Beketovka. Staff officers Paulus after the surrender. In this house the headquarters of the commander of the 64th Army, General Shumilova what states corresponding to a commemorative plaque, as well as the fact that it hosted the first interrogation of a German field marshal.

I think this corner of the hotel "Most of Stalingrad", is a symbol of the same photographic Battle of Stalingrad, as the fountain "Children's dance."

Captive Nazis in the Square of Fallen Fighters.
In the Stalingrad cauldron it was captured more than 91 thousand German soldiers and officers, including 24 generals.

Captive Nazis at the factory "Red October".
One of the three collapsed buildings left in Volgograd, a monument, located on the territory of the factory "Red October". This two-story brick building central laboratory. From this perspective it can be seen only the right end, the rest of the temple is now covers. But on the collage all seen through the temple. I want to thank the Department of Public Relations of the factory "Red October", and personally Dametken Arshimovu and Veronica Yurkov for the operational organization of admission to the modal area of the plant.

6th Army of Wehrmacht:
1940 - without a fight went to Paris
1941 - with substantial losses stormed Kiev
1942/43 year - completely broken down and surrendered at Stalingrad.

Return to Germany the German prisoners began in 1945. It was first released the disabled and the sick. By 1950, the majority of Germans who did not participate in war crimes, has left home. Latest released by 1955.

I read somewhere that some part of the rear entrance to the camel carts in Berlin, it shocked Germans more than the Russian tanks.

The building of the department store.
Again the same point on the street. Ostrowski in the courtyard of the hotel "Intourist". It is here, in the basement, for the first time in the history of captured German Field Marshal surrendered.

Returning to the city residents were forced to live in the basement of the destroyed buildings and dugouts, in the shops of renewable plants.
